Elestor is looking for an Energy Modelling & Business Case Intern

40 hours
Arnhem

Position

Elestor is scaling long-duration energy storage, and is deepening the quantitative approach towards strategic markets. As Elestor’s Energy Modelling & Business Case Intern, you will expand our existing techno-economic framework in close collaboration with the Business Development team to turn commercial questions into decision-ready insights (e.g., NPV/IRR, payback, LCOE/LCOS).

Crucially, Elestor’s flow battery decouples power (MW) from capacity (MWh), making it applicable across many markets and scales -from ~1 MW to 100’s of MW and ~10-150 hours duration. You’ll help explore this space by keeping assumptions transparent, units and magnitudes correct, and results reproducible, to aid leadership in prioritizing markets.

Thesis option: This internship can be structured as a graduation thesis. You’ll conduct applied research (literature & benchmark review, dataset curation, methodology design), document methods and findings to academic standards, and conclude with a management advisory containing recommendations and next steps. We’ll align scope, supervision, and deliverables with your university’s requirements.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Expand Elestor’s existing modelling framework: add modules/features for sizing, dispatch, and economics; keep interfaces clean and assumptions explicit.
  • Work with the Business Development team to capture commercial priorities, refine assumptions, and translate outputs into decision-ready KPIs (NPV/IRR, payback, LCOE/LCOS).
  • Ingest and curate datasets (resource profiles, tariffs/prices, reliability, benchmarks) with clear sources, dates, and units; maintain an assumptions log.
  • Run scenarios & sensitivities (price paths, discount rates, utilization, degradation, policy) and produce concise comparisons and “so-what” summaries.
  • Validate and QA with unit tests, order-of-magnitude checks, and reproducibility; highlight model limits and uncertainty ranges.
  • Deliver clear outputs: version-controlled repo, brief technical notes, and one-pager slides for BD; keep documentation up to date.

Profile - Education, skills and experience

  • Studying MSc/BSc in Energy Systems, (Sustainable) Engineering, (Applied) Physics, Operations Research, Econometrics, or similar.
  • Solid quantitative modelling skills (Python or MATLAB; Python preferred: pandas/numpy).
  • Comfort with financial modelling (DCF/NPV/IRR, discount rates, capex/opex annualization, sensitivity analysis).
  • Experience with data visualisation and dashboarding to make results explorable (for example in Power BI).
  • Clear communicator: you can turn a messy dataset into a crisp recommendation.

Elestor's Mission & Relevance

Imagine a world without polluting power plants, powered purely by clean electricity. This world is closer than you think. The sun and wind are powerful enough, and so are the technologies to harvest their energy. However, possibilities to store renewable energy (sustainably, cost-effectively) are lacking; Long-Duration Electricity Storage (LDES) is “the missing link” in the energy transition.

Technology & Roadmap

Elestor has been recognised as one of the 10 most innovative companies in the Netherlands by both the University of Amsterdam and the Dutch Chamber of Commerce. The revolutionary low-cost flow battery systems have received several (inter)national awards in recognition of the ability to reduce the cost of storing electricity to an absolute minimum. For more understanding, feel free to visit Elestor's website. Here you'll find more about the underlying fundamentals and the triple cost reduction strategy, making Elestor’s solution unique on the world stage.

People & Growth

At Elestor you will be in the middle of genuinely unprecedented developments, made possible by an international group of researchers and engineers of remarkable talent and diversity. In future years, the company will expand literally in every direction. In anticipation of this steep growth, Elestor will look forward to meeting sincere, thoughtful, and entrepreneurial individuals feeling energized to empower necessary change: towards a 100% clean electricity supply.
