A hydrogen-iron flow battery replaces the traditional set-up using short-term batteries and a hydrogen storage. Elestor's battery enables low-cost buffering of electricity, making it possible to run the electrolyser on par with a downstream clean fuel plant. With cost-effective storage durations of 15–30 hours in this application, more renewable energy can be utilized while maintaining stable plant operation.
During periods of low renewable generation, the battery acts as a resilience buffer, allowing electrolysers and fuel synthesis plants to continue operating stable capacity instead of shutting down.
